Boycotts have been an effective social change strategy for years. From the 1960s bus boycotts in the south to the United Farm Workers boycotts in the 70′s. Change occurs when people use their pocketbook power. The main ingredients to a successful boycott are communication, solidarity, and perseverance. We need to keep up the pressure on Johnson & Johnson by using our consumer power in an organized manner. The following are statements from The Star Ledger and Morton Mintz: Inside Johnson & Johnson, workers take pride in the corporation’s famous credo. Summarized it says: Act ethically and responsibly, no matter what the cost, and profits will follow. J&J is proof that profits follow bad corporate behavior, too. Johnson and Johnson is raking in billions without conscience. What we are seeing is a grotesque shift in corporate values. The lengths that Johnson & Johnson will go to increase profits at the expense – even the victimization of humanity. Taxpayers footing fraudulent bills as J&J looks at the government like a blank check, bilking millions from the government. This is despicable behavior, and its widespread. If the same acts were committed by an individual, that person would likely find themselves in prison. Corporations typically face only the loss of cash. Don’t worry, they’ll make more. Perhaps its time J&J were punished like people, too. For a century, one of the world’s largest health care conglomerates has successfully promoted its integrity and concern for consumer well being. That is precisely how Johnson & Johnson wants you to feel. This company has needlessly endangered millions of people willfully disregarding public safety in order to push dangerous products. When a corporation can freely and repeatedly can do so much harm and then escape meaningful punishment, there is something deeply wrong with the way America is doing business. In the Bible, Leviticus admonishes that “one must not put a stumbling block before the blind.” A drug company that deceives physicians by knowingly failing to inform them fully and promptly of the hazards of a prescription drug is doing just that. The blind are of course the doctor’s patients nearly all of whom are ignorant of the complex pros and cons of the drug. So they must -blindly- trust their physicians, and perhaps pay with their health, safety, even their lives.
It is important to communicate the reasons for a Johnson & Johnson boycott as we have done here on this website. Boycotts have been used for years as an effective social strategy. In the 60′s, there were the bus boycotts in the southern parts of the U.S. In the 70′s, we had the United Farm Workers boycotts. Change can only happen when consumers hit the offenders where it hurts – in their pockets. The tools for a successful boycott are smart communication and strong solidarity.
Johnson & Johnson must absolutely change its policies and return to the values of their Credo. Unfortunately, we highly doubt that they ever will. Their greed is too great. This company has continued to engage in widescale destructive behavior. Johnson & Johnson is not the rosy and cheerful company that they portray themselves to be. It is a false image. No other large drug company has been in the media more often over the last few years for drug safety issues than J&J. This company has betrayed the public trust.
The bottom line is that corporations survive on your buying power. By boycotting J&J consumer products, you will be supporting all those who have been devastated by their unethical and immoral business practices. Families have been broken physically, financially, and emotionally. And taxpayers have been cheated through massive medicare fraud. Help support our cause by boycotting Johnson & Johnson consumer products.
Johnson & Johnson Credo: "We believe our first responsibility is to the doctors, nurses and patients, to mothers and fathers and all others who use our products and services… We must be good citizens - support good works and charities."
